What Is Pendle Crypto?
Table of Contents
PENDLE is the native token associated with Pendle, a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol focused on yield tokenization and yield trading. Pendle allows users to separate the principal and yield components of certain yield-bearing assets, creating different markets for those components. PENDLE serves a separate role within the protocol’s governance, incentive, and participation systems. Understanding this distinction is important because PENDLE is not the same asset as Pendle’s Principal Tokens (PT) or Yield Tokens (YT).

What Is Pendle Finance?
Pendle is a permissionless, non-custodial DeFi protocol designed to make yield tradable. In simple terms, it allows users to separate the principal associated with a yield-bearing asset from its future yield and trade those components independently.
Pendle’s architecture uses Standardized Yield (SY) as a common wrapper for supported yield-bearing assets. PT and YT are then created from SY and traded through Pendle’s markets.
This structure gives users different ways to interact with yield without requiring them to treat the underlying asset and its future yield as one position.
What Is Pendle Crypto (PENDLE)?
PENDLE is the native cryptocurrency associated with the Pendle protocol. It is an ERC-20 token used within Pendle’s broader governance and incentive ecosystem.
PENDLE should be viewed separately from the yield products created by Pendle. PT and YT represent components of yield-bearing assets, while PENDLE is the protocol’s own token. Current Pendle documentation describes sPENDLE, the staked version of PENDLE, as the governance token used for voting power and eligible reward distributions.
What Is PENDLE Used For?
PENDLE is connected to several parts of the Pendle ecosystem. Its functions include participation in governance and the protocol’s incentive system.
Pendle’s current mechanism uses PENDLE staking to create sPENDLE. Eligible sPENDLE holders can receive voting power and a pro-rata share of certain protocol reward distributions when they meet the applicable activity requirements.
PENDLE is also used in the protocol’s broader incentive mechanisms. Pendle documentation describes PENDLE emissions as one reward stream associated with eligible liquidity positions, although the specific incentive structure can change according to current protocol rules.
How Does Pendle Yield Tokenization Work?
Pendle begins with a yield-bearing asset, such as an asset that generates interest or other rewards. The asset can be wrapped into Standardized Yield (SY), which provides a common interface for Pendle’s system.
The SY position can then be split into two components: Principal Token (PT) and Yield Token (YT). Pendle’s documentation describes this process as yield tokenization.
This separation allows principal and future yield to be traded independently rather than being combined in one position.
What Are Principal Tokens (PT) and Yield Tokens (YT)?
PT represents the principal of the underlying yield-bearing asset. At maturity, PT can generally be redeemed for the underlying principal according to the applicable market mechanics.
YT represents the yield component. A YT holder is entitled to the yield, rewards, and points associated with the underlying asset until the market’s maturity date. After maturity, YT has no remaining value under Pendle’s documented mechanism.
PT and YT are therefore separate from PENDLE. Owning PENDLE does not mean owning PT or YT, and using Pendle’s yield markets does not necessarily require holding PENDLE.
How Does PENDLE Relate to Pendle Governance?
Pendle’s governance system is evolving toward sPENDLE as its governance and reward mechanism. Current documentation describes sPENDLE as the protocol’s native governance token and states that wallet-held sPENDLE can provide voting power within the Pendle ecosystem.
This means simply holding liquid PENDLE is different from actively participating in governance. Users can stake PENDLE to receive sPENDLE, subject to the protocol’s current rules.
What Is sPENDLE?
sPENDLE is the staked version of PENDLE. Current documentation states that users can stake PENDLE and receive sPENDLE at a 1:1 ratio. sPENDLE itself does not increase in value over time.
Eligible sPENDLE holders can receive voting power and participate in reward distributions. To receive certain rewards, holders must satisfy the protocol’s active-participation requirements. Current rules also provide a withdrawal period for unstaking, with an alternative immediate withdrawal option subject to a fee.
The governance and reward rules are protocol-specific and can change, so users should consult current documentation before staking.
PENDLE is the native token associated with Pendle, while Pendle itself is a DeFi protocol designed to tokenize and trade yield. SY provides the standardized wrapper, PT represents principal, and YT represents future yield. PENDLE operates separately as the protocol token and is connected to governance, staking, and incentive mechanisms.
Understanding these distinctions is important before interacting with Pendle because holding PENDLE, staking it as sPENDLE, and using PT or YT involve different functions, mechanics, and risks.
